Uhhhhhhhh.......

Boris Karloff does not approve.
Why does nobody have any issue with Mrs. Frankenstein trying to set her son up with his first cousin, Elizabeth?

  1. Shelley wrote this novel in 1817 and it was published in 1818... I think it's safe to say that it was a very different time in society and it wasn't necessarily "weird" to marry your first cousin, especially when the circumstances were as unique as they were in Victor Frankenstein's case.

  2. This reminds me of Jane Austen's book Mansfield Park. The main character Fanny Price, marries her first cousin Edmund Bertram. I found this weird, but thought of the time period. I completely agree with Kelsey. Love had less limits in some ways then it does now. This form of incest is practiced in other parts of the world as we speak.

  3. weird, and perhaps requiring a dispensation, but yes, as Nina and Kelsey point out, not completely bonkers at the time.
