New Cinderella

Original Cinderella Story

Medium: Commercial

Major Characters: Prince Charming, Cinderella, Fairy God Mother

Plot: Prince Charming works in a shoe store. Cinderella enters the store. Prince Charming walks over to her immediately and asks if she needs help. She accepts the help excitedly and hastily. She is sort of in a rush. Prince Charming asks her what shoe she would to try on and the size. Cinderella tells him to surprise her. Prince Charming comes out with the new Yeezy shoes. Cinderella is in awe with the shoes. She loves the pretty grey color. She says that it reminds her of a spider she saw in her room. Prince Charming found this weird but was too interested to overthink. In one quick instance, Cinderella puts on the new Yeezy's and exits the store in one instant. She accidentally leaves the old silver Jordan's she originally had on. Prince Charming panics, not over the shoes though. He takes his own money and pays for the shoes she walked away with. He does not want her to be in any trouble. He ponders on how to find her. Hmmm... he thinks. Then magically, Cinderella's Fairy God Mother appears. She gives him directions on how to find Cinderella. Then she says she will notify Cinderella of his arrival. Prince Charming jumps with so much joy that he jumps out of his shoes. The End!

The characters I picked have a major role in the original Cinderella. You cannot tell a Cinderella story without them. They separate Cinderella from any other princess story. I thought of this idea from the first time we did this in class. I was trying to think of a way to sort of have a similar, but more modern plot. Something that people may find more relatable. Well hopefully no one will steal shoes. The setting is a realistic place for two people to meet and sort of hit it off.

  1. This could be a really fun remix. The exchange rate of a pair of Yeezy's to a pair of glass slippers is probably about equal. I wonder how else we could modernize the story though. What if, instead of a magical fairy godmother, that role could be filled by one of Cinderella's friends? Maybe she takes Cinderella to the party in her parents' car that has to be back by midnight? Either way, I think bringing this story to the modern day, without the high culture so present in the original story, would make it more accessible.

  2. This is so interesting, because Cinderella is a thief, and the prince is sort of the main character of the story! I'm not sure the "rags to riches" aspect (which seems foundational) is here, though - how would people recognize that this was a Cinderella story? From the shoes and the prince tracking her down? Maybe the rags to riches part of the story isn't really the most important part...or maybe HOW she goes from not having nice things to having nice things isn't important...

  3. I agree with Caleb and Kate here - I think this is definitely a good start, but I feel like if you're going to remix the story, the fairy godmother could be remixed too. I think because you're making the story modern and it's supposed to be a more realistic love story, maybe the fairy godmother could just be a regular person who's close to Cinderella. I think that would kind of flow with your remix a bit more. As for the "rags to riches" aspect that Kate pointed out - I think she's right in that Cinderella isn't just about a lost shoe and a love story; there has to be more of a message there. I do think it's a really good start, and I agree that it's more of a "realistic" story that people won't have trouble relating to (although I don't know if I even have enough money in my savings to pay for Yeezys, let alone enough money in my pocket)!

  4. I don't get the spider thing. Am I missing something? And is she purposefully trying to steal the shoes or is she just so overcome with how cool they are that she walks out with them? I think if you're going to update Cinderella, you have to make sure that she's still a good person who deserves good fortune! (Unless you're trying to make a PSA about why people shouldn't steal?)

  5. I think this is a really creative way to think about the cinderalla story. I think its a pretty funny story but I'm not sure how it functions as a commercial? it seems like it would be better as a short skit or something like that.
